1. Does the course really make a measurable difference?

Answer: Absolutely! Since 2003 we have shared data with our insurance partners, state legislators and now the Registry of Motor Vehicles is tracking our graduates. Along the way, we've found a 70% reduction in crashes for new drivers and 50% reduction in the severity of those that do crash (as measured in property damage). Many of our insurance partners now offer discounts up to 10% for graduates regardless of age and Safety Insurance actually pays the balance over $75 to encourage their policy holders to receive training.

2. What are the dates?

Answer: We offer classes every Saturday and Sunday and often during the week. Click Here for our course calendar. We often host private classes for schools or corporations, those classes are not normally listed on our calendar. Please contact our office if you'd like us to put together a private program for your group.

5. What does the training include?

Answer: Our training teaches the necessary skills to stay out of accidents. In Control redefines driver training with a closed course, hands-on approach originated from a training program developed for state police agencies, and ambulance crews. In Control uses instructors that are highly skilled, with years of professional racing experience – plus a strong determination to make a change and protect our youth. The training program goes beyond traditional driver training classes and teaches participants how to avoid, react and respond skillfully to emergency situations. Check out the Driver Programs section to learn more.

6. Is a driver's license required or is a permit OK?

Answer: A license or permit is fine. The only restriction is that a participant must be able to perform the basic operations of the vehicle. Ideally any permitted drivers will have completed the on road portion of drivers ed and spent additional time driving with a parent or guardian but will still receive our Crash Prevention Training before they get their license. That way they will have the critical safety skills from our program for the most dangerous time in their lives, the first year of driving.

7. What if it rains or snows?

Answer: We drive in all kinds of weather because these conditions reflect what you might encounter on the road. In fact, we keep a special snow list for students who would like to come back and acquire experience and skill in the snow. If you're scheduled for a class and there is a major snow storm or extreme weather that concerns you, please call our office. If the class is cancelled, our outgoing message will reflect that. If you choose to reschedule for any reason, we request at least seven days notice. Requests to reschedule prior to seven days are done with no financial penalty. Requests to reschedule within seven days of your training date result in a $50 per person reschedule fee. In the event a blizzard or some other weather that makes travel to our site dangerous, no reschedule fee will be charged.

8. What kind of cars do you use to train in? Do they have ABS brakes?

Answer: We currently use new 2009 Toyota Camrys, and yes they have ABS brakes. We feel that ABS brakes are the greatest safety tool to come along in cars in a long while. Most adults don’t even know that their primary purpose is for steering control and therefore fail to get the most out of them. If you don't have ABS brakes on your own car, tthat's ok. Just make sure tell our instructor and we will train you on Threshold Braking as well.

9. My child is afraid to drive. Can you get him/her over that?

Answer: Most likely. Many of our students come to us having already been in a crash. Some are quite shaken up and afraid to “get back on the horse.” We can work with them in a safe and controlled environment, where we start off gently, gain some ability and courage and build from there.

10. What can I do to protect my teen in the days leading up to your course?

Answer: Please read our list of 10 deadly things kids do (or don't do) behind the wheel. Make sure your teen reads them too!

11. How much time is spent behind the wheel?

Answer: You will not spend 4 1/2 hours behind the wheel of our cars! It's important to understand that the key to our program is hands-on experience, but it is augmented by demonstrations, classroom review, etc. Students are given adequate time to master a drill before we move on to the next exercise. In the even they fail a drill the first time, we try it again until they get it done properly. Actual time in the car between demonstration rides and driving is can be less than 2 hours.

12. Which insurance carriers are currently offering discounts?

Answer: Outside of Massachusetts: Many insurance companies offer a discount for our training as a "defensive driving course" credit. Please have your agent contact us with any questions. Inside Massachusetts: Until 4/1/08 the insurance industry (unlike the rest of the United States) had rates set by the Massachusetts Division of Insurance. As a result, discounting was not easy to offer and there were plans in the works for a statewide 5% discount. Fortunately, with the introduction of "managed compeition" carriers are now offering our graduates auto policy discounts up to 10% regardless of a drivers experience.. As of 4/1/08 these carriers are Safety Insurance, Arbella Insurance, Hanover Insurance, Plymouth Rock, Norfolk & Dedham and Quincy Mutual. Commerce Insurance has been a long supporter of our program and promises to file a discount in late 2009. Please consult your agent for details about these discounts and ask them to call us if they are not familar with In Control's program. For "real time" updates to who's offering discounts click here.
